Common practice amongst multinational businesses and organizations is to localize their websites to the countries they encompass. There are many aspects to localization: date format, currency, information density, colour scheme, news, fashion, foods, customs, climate, history and many more considerations. In this article I will be focusing on those organizations which provide a website localized to the Ukrainian language. The following list is a small sample of Ukrainian language sites provided by a diverse set of organisations. Thank you to all these organisations for supporting the Ukrainian language.
In the following URLs you will see frequent use of ua and uk. ua is the ISO 3166-1 country code for Ukraine ➜ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_3166_country_codes. It has multiple uses, one of which is as the internet TLD (Top Level Domain) for Ukraine ➜ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.ua. uk, in this context, is the language tag for the Ukrainian language ➜ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IETF_language_tag & w3.org/International/articles/language-tags
Most of these sites use the lang attribute in the opening html tag in order to specify that the language of the webpage text content is predominantly Ukrainian. So far, I have encountered two forms: lang="uk" and lang="uk-UA". The language tag uk-UA means Ukrainian as used in Ukraine. In the context of an html document, it would be coded as <html lang="uk"> or <html lang="uk-UA">.
